Norse's comeback bid falls short

One night removed from a come-from-behind Three Rivers Conference (TRC) win over Tippecanoe Valley, the Northfield boys’ basketball team couldn’t replicate the feat on Saturday as they fell to Madison-Grant at home, 58-55.

Trailing 13-10 after one quarter, the Norse tied the game up at 21-21 by halftime. The Argylls reclaimed a 34-33 lead heading into the final period before outscoring the hosts 24-22 in the final frame to earn the win.

The loss drops Northfield to 3-7 on the season.

Kyle Reed led the Norse with 17 points while Joe Halderman had 13 and Clayton Tomlinson 11. Tomlinson had team-highs in rebounds with six and assists with four. Reed led the team with four steals.

Northfield will be off until Friday when they host North Miami in a doubleheader with the girls’ team. The boys’ game is set for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off.

Wabash’s girls’ basketball team, meanwhile, dominated throughout on its way to a 63-21 TRC win over Maconaquah.

The Apaches won each quarter on the night, leading 18-4 after one, 33-11 at halftime and 45-17 heading into the fourth.

Carmen Higdon and Bailey Yoakum led the way for Wabash with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Nici Gunderman had seven while Hope Unger and Mariah Wyatt had six apiece.

Unger finished with a game-high 10 rebounds while Higdon had five steals. Kiley Stone had four assists on the night.

The Apache wrestling team picked up a win in the Wabash Invitational on Saturday with a perfect 5-0 record. Wabash earned wins over Tippecanoe Valley (61-10), North Miami (51-24), Heritage (64-13), Winamac (55-22) and Bishop Luers (60-24) on the day to earn the win.

On the season, the Apaches are 14-3 and are ranked 10th in Class 1A’s Coaches poll. They will return to action on Wednesday when they host Southwood.

Manchester’s wrestling team finished sixth at the East Noble Invitational on Saturday with junior Delton Moore named the Outstanding Wrestler on the day after taking home the championship at 170 pounds.

Ethan Shambarger finished second at 113 pounds as did Tyce Rooney at 120 pounds. Jackson Mathias (126 lbs.) and Ashton Moore (182 lbs) each grabbed two wins on the day.

Manchester also returns to action on Wednesday in a three-way meet at Churubusco with Triton and the hosts.

Northfield’s wrestling team competed at the Bill Kerbel Wrestling Invitational at New Haven on Saturday.

Kade Kennedy took fourth at 160 pounds while Jasper Donaldson and Jeremy Okuly each placed sixth at 182 and 285 pounds, respectively.
