Apaches earn county title

The Wabash wrestling team ended a two-year reign by Manchester as Wabash County champions on Saturday with a dominant showing.

The Apaches finished with six individual champions and an unbeaten record against county opponents at Saturday’s Wabash County Invitational at Northfield to earn the county title.

Wabash would go on to win the invitational as a whole with wins over Blackford and Southern Wells to end the day.

Ethan Higgins (106 lbs.), Braden Brooks (120 lbs.), Anthony Long (126 lbs.), Jake Cisneros (145 lbs.), Noah Cressel (182 lbs.) and Blake Price (285 lbs.) all earned individual titles for the Apaches on Saturday.

Southwood had the second-most with four on the day, seeing Isaak King (113 lbs.), Clayton Wells (132 lbs.), Cavin Beavers (195 lbs.) and Carson Rody (220 lbs.) earn individual titles.

Manchester and Northfield each had two individual champions on the day. For the Squires, Wade France earned the 152-pound title and Delton Moore won the 170-pound crown. Northfield’s Dakota France (138 lbs.) and Kade Kennedy (160 lbs.) won titles as well.

Manchester finished the day 2-1 against county foes with the lone loss coming to Wabash before splitting its final two matches of the day against Southern Wells and Blackford.

Elijah Burlingame finished 5-0 at 106 pounds while France and Moore each had four wins. Ethan Shambarger, Tyce Rooney, Jackson Mathias, Andrew Cagle and Bryce Kamphues all had three wins on the day.

Kevin Morales, Ashton Moore and Trey McNall each had two wins while Jacob Caudill and Johnny England picked up a win apiece.

Southwood finished its day with a 2-3 record, defeating Northfield 48-30 and Bremen 57-10 while falling to Wabash 35-24, Manchester 45-31 and Northwestern 40-30.

Elijah Sutton, Chad Elliott, Beavers and Rody all had four wins on the day while Wells was a perfect 5-0.

King finished 3-2 while Braden Sweet, Lamoine Silvers and Codie Sarll had two wins each. Cayden Pricket and Luke Kirk each won a match.

Four of Wabash’s six individual champions finished a perfect 5-0 on the day, highlighted by Cressel earning his 100th career win. Higgins, Brooks and Long finished with five wins on the day while Cisneros went 3-2 and Price 4-1.

RJ Steg finished with four wins at 113 pounds, Traydon Goodwin went 3-2 at 138 pounds and Justin Samons finished 3-1 at 195 pounds.

Wabash’s wins on the day came over Northfield (55-21), Manchester (43-26), Southwood (41-24), Blackford (59-21) and Southern Wells (47-34).

Individual results from Northfield were unavailable as of deadline on Monday.
